Paddle Boarding 101
When our family purchased our first stand up paddle board... there was a bit of a learning curve, and more than a few falls into the lake. Hopefully with a few tips and tricks, you can get going on your paddle board like a pro! And until then.... maybe stick to the shallows.
Tip #1 - The Paddle - The height of your paddle will directly implicate your balance, and the energy exerted to propel yourself through the water. Set your paddle board so it stands approximately six inches taller than you. Too long of a paddle will go deeper into the water, exerting needless energy. Too short of a paddle and you will be forced to hunch over - not overly comfortable. Having the paddle six inches taller than yourself allows the paddle to sit properly just under the water. Aim the blade of the paddle angled forward.
Tip #2 - Holding the Paddle - When checking your hand placement, hold the paddle overhead. Your top hand should rest at the top of the paddle, and your hands should be far enough apart that your elbows form 90-degree angles when holding the paddle up.
Tip #3 - Paddle Depth - Submerge the entire paddle when paddling for increased stability and efficiency. Do not shovel or splash the water, as you will tire out quickly. Instead, keep the paddle low to the water, and hold the paddle vertical with long strokes to help keep the board moving straight. Straighten your arms as you stroke, to utilize your core instead of just your arms.
Tip #4 - Play It Smart - Remember that you are out on the water, and this leads to some unpredictability. Ensure you are choosing to use your paddle board on calmer days. Keep to the shallows and boat-free zones when possible, and always wear a life jacket!
