When embarking out on the water, safety is rarely the most exciting part. However, it is undoubtedly the most essential. In fact, regulation from the Government of Canada states that there are several  items that are required on-boat a motorized watercraft at all times - regardless if you are renting, borrowing, or own the watercraft.

1. Life Jackets

  • One appropriately sized life jacket must be available for every person on board.

2. A Buoyant Heaving Line

  • Must be at least 15 meters in length.

3. A Manual Propelling Device or Anchor

  • If your engine has a problem, paddling to shore may be your only option.
  • When stuck on the water, having an anchor with at least 15 meters of rope will keep you from drifting away while waiting for help.

4. Bailer or Hand Pump

  • We all love to swim.... but not inside our boats. Be prepared incase you have an influx of water to remove. A simple sand pail will work nicely.

5. A Sound Signalling Device

  • No.... your mother-in-law yelling at you does not count.

6. Navigation Lights

  • Needed if the watercraft will be used after sunset, or during times of reduced visibility such as fog.

7. A Class 5BC Fire Extinguisher

  • Unfortunately your boat cannot Stop-Drop-And-Roll.

8. A Waterproof Flashlight or 3 Canadian-Approved Flares

  • Don't depend on your cell phone to signal for help. Trust me, Snap-Chat doesn't always work in middle of the lake.

9. A Vessel License

  • Required on-board during all operation of motorized watercrafts. You wouldn't road-trip without your drivers license - same concept bro.

Don't take the risk - be prepared on the water. Contact our parts department if you have questions or need additional pieces for your safety kit. We also carry pre-assembled kits in-store should you wish!

Edit: BRP has since released their own safety kit; including, a bailer, flash light, 15 meters of buoyant heaving line, and whistle - to get you started.
